Tips on How to Fight Cockroaches Effectively

When cockroaches make themselves at home in your house, it can be hard to kick them out. They will start snacking on your food, damaging wallpaper, electronics and books. Some species can also cause diseases to humans. Here are some effective tips on how to fight cockroaches effectively.

Deny them food and water

Cockroaches can live for a month without taking any food but can only survive for a week without water. Find and fix all water leaks in your house. Ensure you wash all your dishes and keep food away promptly after every meal. Pay extra attention to range tops, as roaches like grease. Always keep food containers sealed and avoid leaving fruits on countertops.

Cockroach baits

You can either use a commercial or homemade bait. Commercial baits consist of a poison mixed with attractive foods for roaches. Cockroaches consume the poison and excrete it in their nests, where other roaches come into contact with the poison and die. When making a homemade bait, mix boric acid with flour and sugar.
The flour and sugar attracts roaches, while the acid kills them. Put the baits in corners, under the sinks or along baseboards,

Insecticides

A simple way of killing adult cockroaches is by spraying them with a solution of water and soap. 3 or 4 drops of the solution are enough to kill a cockroach. Soapy water blocks the roaches’ breathing pores. Commercial insecticides with cyfluthrin as the active ingredient also effectively kills the pests. Spray the insecticide everywhere the cockroaches may be entering the house or hiding, including in cracks, vents or along walls. Ensure you follow the instruction on the insecticide’s label and keep pets and children away when spraying.

Natural repellants

The catnip herb is a natural repellant for cockroaches that will see you get rid of the pests without worrying about pets and your children. Nepatalactone, the active ingredient in the herb, is highly toxic to roaches but harmless to humans and pets. Leave catnip leaves near roaches’ hiding areas, they will just leave the house.

A mixture of garlic and cayenne or red pepper also effectively repels roaches. Sprinkle the powder around the roaches’ hiding places. How this works is not yet scientifically understood.

Cockroaches can be troublesome and getting rid of them can be a daunting experience. Most cockroaches are nocturnal and getting to them can be a little bit tricky. Fortunately, the above discussed four tips will help you win the fight against these dangerous pests.
